Children's Book Week 2020

This week marks Children’s Book Week, a week aimed at encouraging children to read.

The initiative was started in the US in 1919 and has grown into an international phenomenon with children getting involved with, and developing a love for books and for reading.

The slogan for 2020 is Read. Dream. Share and members of Outwood Family are sharing their favourite children’s book including Outwood’s Associate Director of Reading and English Hub Lead, Catherine Wright.

Catherine said:

“We are delighted to be supporting Children’s Book Week at Outwood. I remember my favourite book from when I was a child still, The Bog Baby! I love this book because it has magical illustrations, but also teaches us an important lesson about not taking wild creatures home with us to keep as pets.”

Discussing the importance of a child reading, Catherine added:

“Reading and discussing texts with children brings a wide range of benefits and enjoyment for both the adult and child.

“It expands children's understanding of the world, broadens their vocabulary and develops their fluency and expression. Reading enjoyment has been reported as more important for children’s educational success than their family’s socio-economic status.”
