A secondary academy based in Wakefield has been recognised by a national charity for its inclusion work with its students.

Outwood Grange Academy, based on Potovens Lane, has been awarded the Gold level of the National SMSC Quality Mark by Young Citizens. The award is recognition of the academy’s work regarding the social, moral, social and cultural development of its students.

In the verification report, the awarding body recognised the ‘strong sense of moral purpose’ at the academy and that ‘the renewed focus on students’ personal development through SMSC education has further enhanced the provision for Outwood Grange students.’

Speaking after receiving the award, the academy’s principal, Brian Kelly said:

“We are proud and honoured to receive this award. It really is testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff to ensure we are fully supporting the development of our students in every aspect of their lives.

“At Outwood, we believe in putting students first and this goes beyond the classroom for us. This award is a real example of how we aim to achieve this and we are excited to continue working hard for our students.”

According to its website, the SMSC Quality Mark has been developed by a working group of educational consultants, headteachers and teachers, in partnership with staff at Young Citizens. The framework is all about empowering young people for a stronger society.

It is this element of engaging with society and the wider community that was picked up in the verification report. It stated:

“It was also clear from conversations with parents and Academy Council members, that the whole school community subscribes to the vision and practical opportunities this brings. Parents especially, valued the clear consistent communications between school and the wider community, during the restrictions of lock-down and the smooth transitions to remote learning.” 

The key driving force behind the academy’s success in achieving this award has been Julekha Motara, Associate Assistant Principal at the academy. Julekha has led on the development of SMSC at Outwood Grange and was singled out in the report for praise.

Julekha said:

“The whole academy community has really embraced what we’ve been trying to achieve with this, and to be given the Gold level is a significant achievement for us. We are all so proud.”
