Teach North Teaching Internship Programme Set To Begin
Teach North are to continue with its Teaching Internship Programme 2020 during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The Maths and Physics teaching internship programme, offered by Teach North with backing from the Department of Education, is aimed at undergraduates completing a STEM related degree who are interested in teaching secondary maths or physics.
Now in its third year, the internship is a paid programme with each intern receiving £1,200 for their participation and work. However, due to current circumstances, this year’s programme will be very different to that of the previous two years.
Emma Tate, Director of the Outwood Institute of Education, said:
“We are excited to welcome the 2020 Maths and Physics teaching interns to Teach North, albeit a bit differently to the previous two cohorts!
“We are determined to make sure this year’s programme is just as successful as the previous two despite the challenges we face currently as a society.”
The 2020 cohort, which consists of seven interns, will be taught entirely remotely with Teach North taking full advantage of the fantastic IT and digital learning capabilities available in the Outwood Family.
Teach North is one of a handful of educational institutions that are continuing to offer the Maths and Physics teaching internship programme, ensuring future teachers can still gain valuable experience ahead of their exciting potential careers.
Emma added:
“We are delighted to still be able to welcome the 2020 interns onto the programme. We felt it was the only right thing to do, to continue to offer the internship if we were in a position where we could.
“We have many things planned to ensure the interns gain that valuable experience and insight into what it means, and what it is like, to be a teacher, which can help them in their future career.”
As part of the programme, the interns will gain experience of what is expected of teachers, with sessions focused on different subjects, the expectations of children at different key stage levels, while also having the chance to lead remote lessons.
The interns will also have the opportunity to meet former interns who are now Teach North trainee teachers, who will act as mentors for the interns while also leading a book club which will last the length of the internship programme.
One former intern, Amy Wilson, who will commence her teacher training with Teach North in September, said: “I am delighted to support the programme this year, and I look forward to working with the 2020 cohort and will help them as much as I can.
“I know how fun and beneficial the programme can be. It taught me how to be a better teacher and it gave me so many ideas to make my lessons exciting and I want to do my bit to make sure this year’s interns get as much out of the programme as I did.”
