Working at Outwood - Claire Ormandy
Hi, I am Claire Ormandy and I’m the Hearing Impairment ARC (Additionally Resourced Centre) Outwood Academy Danum Manager and Teacher of the Deaf.
I work for Doncaster HI Service but have worked at Outwood Academy Danum since it took over in 2014, so I was here when it joined the Outwood Family in 2016.
What do you find most rewarding about working for Outwood?
It's inclusiveness. Obviously I work for Doncaster HI Service, but do my work at Outwood. Some people in my situation have told me that they sometimes are marginalised by those where they are based, but that really is not the case here at Outwood.
I don't feel sidelined or excluded as 'not part of Outwood staff' at all and it’s a really nice place to come to work.
For example, we all at the Hearing Impairment ARC have felt included in all Outwood-based opportunities and we’ve also provided opportunities to Outwood staff, including Deaf Awareness and Sign Language starter courses.
We are also included in all INSET days and courses, and it is things like this that really make us feel a part of the Outwood Family.
What is one of the highlights of your time with Outwood?
For me it definitely has to be taking six Year 9 profoundly Deaf students and their hearing peers to the Kingswood residential outward bound centre and joining in ALL the activities. It was so much fun and it was great to see the students in a different environment, all getting along.
