Working at Outwood - Kate Haworth

Hi, I am Kate Haworth, an Associate Assistant Principal and the Mental Health Lead at Outwood Academy Hemsworth.

I have worked at Hemsworth for 20 years, so I’ve seen the school become part of the Outwood Family in 2018, and I am a diverse teacher as I teach PE, Health and Social Care and Maths.

What do you find most rewarding about working for Outwood?

Seeing the difference we make to the lives of our students, and all the opportunities and support that our students receive during their time with us is amazing to see, which I think is the product of the Outwood vision, Students First.

This really is paramount and influences all the decisions that we make, including the vast support we are offered as staff. The systems and processes utilised throughout the Outwood Family create a consistent approach to teaching and learning that facilitates positive relationships with students, which supports staff to effectively deliver lessons.

What CPD opportunities have you been involved with so far?

I am always impressed by the range of CPD and training that is on offer from the Outwood Institute of Education and we are encouraged to take up opportunities to develop professionally. All the training opportunities have been high quality and informative.

The most recent courses that I have done have been Teaching Middle Leaders, which as a member of staff in a school that had recently joined the Outwood Family provided an in-depth insight into systems and processes used within Outwood.

I have been supported as a non-specialist teacher by taking part in the Secondary Non Specialists Maths Course this year which has developed my understanding of how to teach the subject, while also completing Mental Health First Aid for Youth.

What is one of the highlights of your time with Outwood?

I have a lot of different highlights, but most of the special ones have been taking students out of school on trips such as the ski trip, university visits and sporting events.

I believe it is on these occasions you see a different side of our students and it is fantastic to observe them broadening their horizons.
