NHS Careers Day at OA Foxhills

The event which took place at Outwood Academy Foxhills on 14 October, gave GCSE Health and Social Care students an insight into the many career opportunities available within the National Health Service (NHS).

The exhibitors at the event represented a range of specialisms across the NHS, including midwives, community nurses, pharmacy and operating. Students worked in small groups spending time with each specialism, being able to ask questions and engage in hands-on practical activities. When asked about the event, one student commented:

“I really enjoyed it, it was very engaging and interactive and I learnt a lot. It broadened my spectrum and I got to learn important life skills such as checking a pulse and how to do chest compressions.”

Also in attendance were representatives from Hull York Medical School, University of Lincoln, Bishop Burton College and John Leggott College. Students were able to discuss their further and higher education options, particularly looking at pathways to medical related careers. One student, Ella, said:

“The NHS experience day was very helpful and has given me a few ideas for the future. They gave me lots of information on each career and the college and university options within the areas I would like to focus on.”

Another student added:

“The NHS Day was really fun, especially the practical activities. There was a lot of information about different careers which made me think more about the medical profession as a job.”

Claire Bradbury, Careers Lead at Outwood Academy Foxhills, organised the event and said:

“I wanted to bring the experiences of working within the NHS into our school; the practical materials and resources that were shown to our students allowed them to really understand the day to day working lives of the different areas within the NHS. It was a great way to show the students what is available to them once they leave school.

“The Colleges and Universities also helped them understand the qualifications they would need to pursue a career in a medical field and the courses available. Our students interacted with the visitors fantastically and were a credit to the Academy. It was a fantastic event!”
