OPA Kirkhamgate gets a visit from the Mayor of Wakefield

The Mayor of Wakefield, Councillor David Jones, paid a visit to Outwood Primary Academy Kirkhamgate on Monday 3 October as part of the school’s community engagement programme.

The visit started with a whole school assembly, in which the Mayor educated the students about the many aspects of his role and how he serves the community, before explaining the importance of various items of his ceremonial dress, including his robes, chain and mace. One student volunteer, Bobby, then had the opportunity to dress up in ceremonial robes and become ‘Mini Mayor’. After the assembly, the Mayor met with the students who make up the Academy Parliament for a more in depth Q and A session.

Lisa Cooke, Head of School, said of the visit:

“What an inspiring and educational visit from the Mayor. The children thoroughly enjoyed meeting him and having the opportunity to find out more about what the role entails and the dedication he shows to the local community. Academy Parliament members were a real credit to our school; being perfect role models and asking lots of relevant questions.”

Academy Parliament members are chosen by democratic vote within their own class, and are voted in to represent their peers. This group of students are involved with lots of school-wide activities, many of which are linked to the local community and they have a large focus on promoting British Values within the academy.

The Mayor added:

“It was delightful to visit Outwood Primary Academy Kirkhamgate and attend the Monday morning assembly. The children were a brilliant audience and responded well to the Mini Mayor being chosen by the school for the assembly who helped explain the robes and instruments of the Office of Mayor.

“I was able to tell the attentive audience of my adventures and experiences during my first four months of my year in office. Following the assembly, I met with Parliament and was asked some very searching questions. The children were very receptive and enthusiastic representing the Academy to the highest standards.”
