Primary children inspired by award-winning artist

Pupils at Outwood Primary Academy Lofthouse Gate have been inspired by an award-winning artist after a creative session producing outdoor art entirely from natural materials.

The Year 2 pupils spent the afternoon with artist, James Brunt, using foraged materials to create artwork on the school grounds. Mr. Brunt, who works extensively with schools and public groups on outdoor art projects, encourages both children and adults to create art through exploration and play.

Spencer, one of the pupils who participated, said:

“This was the best afternoon ever because I have enjoyed being outside making art.”

Another student, Abel, added:

“It was amazing!”

Reflecting on the session, Mr Brunt said:

“I loved what the children created at OPA Lofthouse Gate, it was made with such enthusiasm and joy. The children were so excited to explore, forage and collect, but also very focused when around the work.

“My favourite school sessions are the ones where I can step back and let the children take over. This was definitely one of those days. The outcome was spectacular and the pupils should be very proud of their achievements.”

The session was delivered to support pupils learning as they are currently studying the works of British Sculptor, Andy Goldsworthy OBE, who also produces work in natural settings. The creation of Land Art with Mr. Brunt helps children to develop their teamwork, creativity and empathy with natural surroundings, whilst also giving them valuable time to learn outside.

Hannah Park, Year 2 Teacher who organised the visit, said:

“It was a really inspiring experience for the children in Year 2 to get to work with James. I was blown away by the final piece that they were able to make using natural materials from the school grounds. James was a fabulous enhancement to our art curriculum this half term.”
